In just 30 hours per year, you can make a big difference in the life of a child. Lutheran Social Services School-Based Mentor Program empowers youth to succeed by establishing trusting relationships with adult volunteers. Mentors have a significant impact on youth by increasing self-esteem, providing guidance and developing consistent, long-term friendships. Volunteers spend an hour a week one-on-one with an elementary, middle or high school student working on fun activities or just hanging out and talking. All public schools in Lincoln and Minnehaha County are participating in this program. Contact us today at 221-2403, mentoring@lsssd.org or visit http://mentoring.lsssd.org and complete an application! |

Join Native American Scholars and Big Brothers Big Sisters as we seek to change the lives of children in our community for the better! We need positive adult role models to mentor our city's at-risk youth. Native Americans in Sioux Falls suffer the worst graduation rates of any student demographic; Native American Scholars works with mentors and the Sioux Falls School District to change that trend. The mission of Native American Scholars is to ensure academic success and cultural appreciation among our youth; as a mentor, you will help with homework, provide job-shadowing opportunities, and have FUN! Our programs are FREE for everyone involved (including mentors - we give you resources so you don't have to pay for the activities you and your mentee participate in)! Mentors requirments include: spend 2-4 hours each month with your mentee for a minimum of one year; have legal use of a vehicle; pass a background and reference check; and HAVE FUN (did we say that already?). You will no doubt find the experience rewarding and we hope to hear from you soon! Check us out on Facebook by searching "Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire." There you will find other program information, in addition to some of the awesome events we provide our matches. Call or email today! |

Girls on the Run of Sioux Falls |
Contact: Stacy Stahl
Phone: 605-336-3660 ext 208

Girls on the Run is an afterschool program that works with young girls, ages 8-11, on building self confidence and learning about how to live a healthy lifestyle. If you are a woman, age 18 and older, we want you to be a role model and mentor in healthy living for our girls! Volunteer coaches work with our girls for 10 weeks - once or twice a week (we are flexible and can work with a variety of schedules) for an hour and 15 minutes. During this time, there is a lesson (we use a prepared curriculum - no prep work involved!), games, activities and running (non-competitive - no running experience required!) to empower girls to feel good about themselves and to have positive attitudes, etc. It's a great way to get involved in the community, by working with it's youngest members on issues that we all faced as pre-adolescents. Our fall season starts in September and there are over 20 different schools in the Sioux Falls area that will be hosting GOTR programs - we can put you at a site that is close to work or home. Give Stacy a call to set up a time to meet and chat about getting involved! |

I am participating in the 2010 Volunteer Sioux Falls Day, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, as one of the event’s ambassadors. To date, there are about 45 projects planned with hundreds of people donating their time to make a difference in the community through a variety of projects. I’m still looking for people to join my volunteer team and help with a project; can you share some of your time to participate in Volunteer Sioux Falls? I will be working with the Great Plains Zoo to do a fall clean up of some of their exhibits to get ready for winter (don’t worry – the animals won’t be there while we’re cleaning/raking!). We’ll also do some Zoo Boo decorating to get ready for the fun, fall event. Volunteer Sioux Falls Details: Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 12:30-3:30 p.m. Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum All materials will be provided by the zoo – we just need to show up! Bring a friend! What’s in it for you: · A FREE Volunteer Sioux Falls T-shirt · See the Great Plains Zoo behind the scenes · Give the Zoo staff a break – they work so hard to make the Zoo one of Sioux Falls’ best attractions · Make a difference for the animals who call the Zoo their home · Give back to the community · See old friends/make new friends · Pad your resume with a great volunteer opportunity · Hang out with ME · Hang out at the Zoo for free after we’re done If you’re interested in helping with Volunteer Sioux Falls or know of anyone who would like to assist on Sept. 25, please let me know or pass along a name ... call 605.373.2054. FYI, (here’s the guilt …) I will be 36 weeks pregnant on Sept. 25 and I’m volunteering my time – can you spare a few hours to help me out? Thank you, thank you, thank you! Amy |

Contact: Amber Lounsbery
Phone: 605-367-7877

The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, and life skills of youth through mostly experiential learning programs. Though typically thought of as an agriculturally focused organization as a result of its history, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, and science, engineering and technology programs. We are in need of volunteers willing to lend a hand leading project areas or clubs or helping out at various county events on a short term basis. |
