In just 30 hours per year, you can make a big difference in the life of a child. Lutheran Social Services School-Based Mentor Program empowers youth to succeed by establishing trusting relationships with adult volunteers. Mentors have a significant impact on youth by increasing self-esteem, providing guidance and developing consistent, long-term friendships. Volunteers spend an hour a week one-on-one with an elementary, middle or high school student working on fun activities or just hanging out and talking. All public schools in Lincoln and Minnehaha County are participating in this program. Contact us today at 221-2403, mentoring@lsssd.org or visit httmentoring.lsssd.org and complete an application! :) |

Join Native American Scholars and Big Brothers Big Sisters as we seek to change the lives of children in our community for the better! We need positive adult role models to mentor our city's at-risk youth. Native Americans in Sioux Falls suffer the worst graduation rates of any student demographic; Native American Scholars works with mentors and the Sioux Falls School District to change that trend. The mission of Native American Scholars is to ensure academic success and cultural appreciation among our youth; as a mentor, you will help with homework, provide job-shadowing opportunities, and have FUN! Our programs are FREE for everyone involved (including mentors - we give you resources so you don't have to pay for the activities you and your mentee participate in)! Mentors requirments include: spend 2-4 hours each month with your mentee for a minimum of one year; have legal use of a vehicle; pass a background and reference check; and HAVE FUN (did we say that already?). You will no doubt find the experience rewarding and we hope to hear from you soon! Check us out on Facebook by searching "Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire." There you will find other program information, in addition to some of the awesome events we provide our matches. Call or email today! |

Girls on the Run is an afterschool program that works with young girls, ages 8-11, on building self confidence and learning about how to live a healthy lifestyle. If you are a woman, age 18 and older, we want you to be a role model and mentor in healthy living for our girls! Volunteer coaches work with our girls for 10 weeks - once or twice a week (we are flexible and can work with a variety of schedules) for an hour and 15 minutes. During this time, there is a lesson (we use a prepared curriculum - no prep work involved!), games, activities and running (non-competitive - no running experience required!) to empower girls to feel good about themselves and to have positive attitudes, etc. It's a great way to get involved in the community, by working with it's youngest members on issues that we all faced as pre-adolescents. Our fall season starts in September and there are over 20 different schools in the Sioux Falls area that will be hosting GOTR programs - we can put you at a site that is close to work or home. Give Stacy a call to set up a time to meet and chat about getting involved! |

There are always opportunities to get involved on committees and network in the community through your local Boy Scout district. We are looking to form a nominating committee. This committee would help identify community-minded and well-connected people to fill roles on our district committee. There are several open positions that need filling. All you have to do is help us identify individuals in the community (no Scouting background necessary) who would be great in those volunteer roles. Contact me for more information! Thank you! |

Second Chance Mentoring is a "Mother's" Re-entry Program. Our purpose is to provide quality mentoring services to mothers leaving prison and returning to our community. When women were asked what helped them the most when leaving prison and returning to the community, the number one response was; "Family, friends, and WOMEN who were postivie role models." Who is a Mentor? Most women can be mentors. Many women are already mentors in various settings in life. Women have the natural ability to provide support, encouragement and friendship. As women; we can profoundly change another woman's life through mentoring. All women have something to give, lessons about life to share, and advice to give. Most importantly, WOMEN CARE! For more information about becoming a Mentor - or if you know someone who would be a great Mentor please call Mary or Erin at 605.367.4293. |
